FAQ

Answers to the Most Frequently Asked Questions at The Hedgehog

1. It's what happens when you let your children name your store.

2. Contrary to rumor, the guy behind the counter in a tie is not on work release. He is married to the owner, and when he is in town, he comes in to the Hedgehog to harass the customers.

3. The Social Security Office is next door in the old Woolworth's Building.

4. You have to be at least 17 years old to work at The Hedgehog.

5. Vanilla ice cream is our most popular flavor.

6. No, there isn't a bed in the back of the store.

7. During the summer we make, on average, between 30 - 35 gallons of cream per day.

8. I don't know why so many of the beautiful shops in historic downtown Bethlehem close at 5:00.

9. The Hedgehog is open year round, seven days a week, beginning at noon. We only close for 6 holidays each year.

10. Yes, we have soft serve in addition to our hard ice cream.

11. An ice cream float is made with soda (Coke, Diet Coke, Rootbeer, or Sprite) and a scoop of ice cream. An ice cream soda is made with chocolate, vanilla, or strawberry syrup, milk, club soda, and a scoop of ice cream.

12. An egg cream is a tradition in many New York cities. It does not (nor did it ever) contain egg. Apparently, it was created during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Eggs were at a premium so any food that claimed to have eggs in it was considered a luxury. Traditional New York egg creams are made with Fox's U-Bet syrups, primarily chocolate or vanilla, half-and-half, and club soda. No ice cream is added. We heard the other day, however, that Ben and Jerrys make their own version of the egg cream, and apparently they do add ice cream.
